The January storyline, introduced in 2018, is a minor addition to the January event. Within this storyline, you meet Laharu, as well as the Queen Mother.
Novels
As of January 2018, the Great Hunger event has its own storyline involving Laharu and the Queen Mother. The storyline begins with Novel 1, Chapter 1 unlocking on January 5th at 02:10am Lioden time.

Novel Rewards
Each player receives nearly the same rewards for completing the storyline; however, the backgrounds and marking applicator received can vary depending on your choice, and your leader's karma will either be raised by 200 or lowered by 200. All rewards are displayed below, and have been split into sections to show which rewards are universal and which rewards are tied to specific actions.

Universal Item Rewards
These rewards are given regardless of whether you chose to kill the Queen Mother or subdue the Queen Mother in the final chapter of the storyline. Along with receiving 20 Leather Beetles, 30% Impression, 400xLVL Experience, and 500 Silver Beetles, you are given the following items.
Items for Killing the Queen Mother
For choosing to Kill the Queen Mother within the final chapter of the storyline, you are guaranteed to receive the following unique backgrounds, as well as having your karma lowered by 200.
In addition to the backgrounds above, you can also choose between one of the following marking applicators to receive. You can only receive one from this list. The list is ordered from oldest applicator to newest applicator.
Items for Subduing the Queen Mother
For choosing to Let Go of the Queen Mother within the final chapter of the storyline, you are guaranteed to receive the following unique backgrounds, as well as having your karma increased by 200.
In addition to the backgrounds above, you can also choose between one of the following marking applicators to receive. You can only receive one from this list. The list is ordered from oldest applicator to newest applicator.
Daily Quest Pool
Once you have finished Novel 1, Chapter 2, in between the novel unlock dates as well as once the storyline is finished, you are able to complete daily quests in order to receive extra rewards.
The daily quests reset upon rollover, and you can take another quest again the following day.
If the quest you have taken is too difficult, you can pay a fee of 100 SB to take a different quest.
As the novels unlock, the quest rewards are improved and offer more for you and your leader.
Laharu peeks out of his den and greets you. "So, I think you could help me with a thing..."
Once you have helped Laharu, he will skulk away and hide until the next rollover.
Laharu isn't here. Or, maybe he is, but he's hiding very well. Either way, you should come back tomorrow.
Novel 1 Pool
Bring 30 uses of any meat.
In order to complete this quest, you must give Laharu carcasses that amount to 30 total uses of food.
Bring 5x Small Meat Chunks.
In order to complete this quest, you must give Laharu 5 total Small Meat Chunks—not 5 uses of Small Meat Chunks.
Bring 2x Zebra Carcass
In order to complete this quest, you must give Laharu 2 total Zebra Carcasses—not 2 uses of Zebra Carcasses.
Novel 2 Pool
Novel 2's pool includes the quest pool from Novel 1, as well as the following.
Win with any enemy a total of 10 battles.
In order to complete this quest, you must win a total of 10 battles. This counts how many battles you have won, not how many opponents you are fighting. One Large Hyena Clan defeated, for example, will only count towards one battle won. Laharu will not help you fight these NPCs.
Defeat 2 scary Large Hyena Clans in Explore.
In order to complete this quest, you must win battles against 2 Large Hyena Clans in Explore. Laharu will not help you fight these NPCs.
Take 50 steps in Explore.
In order to complete this quest, you must click the "Explore" paw print 50 times, essentially taking "50 steps".
Novel 3 Pool
Novel 3's pool includes the quest pools from Novels 1 and 2, as well as the following.
Defeat 10 Hyenas.
In order to complete this quest, you must win 10 total battles against any NPC that is categorised as a hyena. This counts towards the hyenas from January's event encounters. Laharu will not help you fight these NPCs.
