A truly terrifying view surprises you - the whole horizon and nearby lands are consumed by fire! What appear to be pieces of the sun are falling on the ground with sizzling thuds, as embers from burning craters ignite nearby grass and dry bush. Heavy smoke reflects the fire in a hypnotising orange aura. A lonely silhouette of Apollyon can be seen wandering towards you between the flames. You find a narrow path to join him.
What's happening?
Page 1
Apollyon's flames die down a bit as you approach. He wants you to be safe. Maybe it's true, and he really can control the fire by sheer will. Is he a demon? He looks very lion-like for a demon.
"I am cleansing the blight of Apedemak that taints these lands. Only by complete destruction can I cut him off from killing more lions and get rid of his vile reign! The whispers trapped in the ground won't find their way to his manipulative paws."
That's a bit dramatic
Page 2
"Dramatic? Look at what this devil is doing! Murdering lions and stealing their souls, bribing kings like you to collect the remains of his kingdom, manipulating you to do all the dirty work for him, and enslaving his own family into breeders?! I won't let this continue. I want to free Menhit. I will free the world of his blight. Join me, and together we can manipulate Apedemak, so that he ends himself. I know things, but my powers are too weak to challenge a half god like him."

You hear Apedemak and Tefnut having a discussion about something, but you can't quite make out what it's about. You wait until they are done, giving them privacy outside of his cave. You can hear quiet sobbing and her mumbling about "those poor souls" as Tefnut passes you by. She leaves the cave with her head hanging low, but she looks different... She coughs a few times, and whisper smoke gently emanates from her body.
Lord, I came to see you
Page 4b from Page 3
Apedemak licks his side and notices your presence. On his side is a scratch from another lion, but you're assuming it to be Menhit's smack from earlier.
"Ah, [NAME], maybe if you do well tonight, I will let you have Tefnut. She's becoming completely useless to my projects. Every time I channel lion souls into her body to breed an Astral lion, she just cries over some aggressive ancestors and "overwhelming memories" she claims to hear and feel. Loads of guilt tripping to have touchy feely evenings instead, if you ask me. Speaking of, I need more whispers. Trap 30 for me, will you?"
You have currently trapped 0/30 whispers in explore.
Page 5 from Page 4b
In order to proceed, you must Trap a total of 30 Whispers in Explore.
When you come across the following encounter, you must choose the Trap option.

"You notice faint, flickering blue streaks of light. It's energy of lion souls, called Whispers, because a silky rustling noise and certain words can be heard around them. They are very active, disturbed by falling stars.

Bow down
Page 5 from Page 4b
This will do. Bring Tefnut to me! You got +(LVL x 40) EXP, 4% Impression and +2 Reputation with Apedemak!
You find Tefnut waiting outside, ready for her date, and nudge her towards the cave. You can't really question what a king does with his subjects. She smiles, trying to look cuter than before with a tiny flower in her ear. Perhaps she wants to make Apedemak notice something else besides the quality of the whispers.

Wonderful. Bring me 50 Meteorite Shards, so that I can continue purging the blight and clearing the land. The whispers need to be free, to rejoin Mother Earth in the cycle of life. See this ash and charcoal? All of this will help nature revive and cleanse itself.
You currently have #/50 Meteorite Shards.

All that's left to do for you is to check on Apedemak. Trick him into thinking you are supporting him. This way, we will learn about his next move.
Sounds like a plan
Page 4a from Page 3
As you chill on the cliff nearby Apedemak's cave, you hear a loud shriek, followed by a roar, and then... silence. Something doesn't feel right. You trot down, the smell of blood becoming stronger as you go.
Peek inside
Page 6 from Pages 3a and 5a
Apedemak is standing over Tefnut's body. Body...? You look at him in terror. His face is bloody, and his pupils are tinier than a wasp's sting. He looks soulless, as if using all these whispers washed his own away.
"She was USELESS! She wasted all my whispers, my time! I need Menhit. Bring her at once. She's my only hope. I don't have much more time - the conjunction is near!"
You step back. You really hope he doesn't mean she's next in line to drop dead. The very least you should do is to tell her what happened to Tefnut.
Find Menhit
Page 7
You find Menhit outside in her meadow. You tell her vaguely that something bad happened, and she follows you, noticeably worried. It's almost as if she had a suspicion that something like this was coming. She trusts you enough to not ask questions. When you approach the cave, she goes in first without hesitation. The scream of terror and anger shakes the ceiling, but instead of attacking her father, Menhit drops to her mother's body and starts mourning.
"[NAME], I beg you, we have to honour her pointless death. We must free her whisper before my father takes it!"
Apedemak snarls, but doesn't seem to care about what she says.
"Her whisper belongs to me, both of you do. [NAME], get her out and help me extract it."
They both look at you with clear expectations.

You step forward, looking at Apedemak with pointed fury in your eyes. You explain that there's a time for projects, and a time for mourning. It's her mother, and there's nothing more important or painful in the world than burying a parent. Apedemak looks down and stares at Tefnut. Maybe he seems to understand that while she might have been just an object to him, she was a whole world to their daughter.
"Fine. Take her body. I will get enough whispers one way or another."
As you drag the body out, Menhit tells you where to go. Together, you bury her. While you're making a mound, Apollyon shows up and helps, concerned with Menhit's silence. The three of you pay respects to Tefnut's spirit and free it with a vapor of incense. She will be reunited, even temporarily, with the astral dimension of the Earth, rather than the Celestial Kingdom. The Lion Shamans will guide her now.
I am very sorry it happened
Page 9a from Page 8
"It's okay. I know if I ever visit the Celestial Lands, I will see her there, and the Sangomas will guide her towards my energy. Unlike you, I can see the lions who have passed and can spend time with them, just like if they were as real as you. It's just... very horrible what my father did. I think he's very blinded. I think the energy he's dealing with has twisted his own whisper. Thank you for everything. I will speak to my boyfriend, hopefully we'll find a solution. Maybe we could remind him of how he was in the past, or guide his lost soul out of this darkness."
Menhit leans against you.
Go back home.

You look down at Tefnut's body. It's over. She's already gone, and you cannot do anything to undo this. This is not your family to mourn. You nudge Menhit to let her go. You say quietly that it'd be better if she left. You do not reveal your true plans. She can only imagine whether you'll twist Apedemak's actions or indeed help him out. Menhit starts to cry and runs out, leaving you two alone. You're very familiar with the fact that lions kill their pride mates for dominance or petty rewards; karma renown, for one example. But... this seems as if it was done under the spell of a trance that Apedemak cannot snap out of.
"[NAME], I am so proud of you. You always know what to do. Let's prepare the ritual."
As Apedemak prepares his shards and magic, you notice one of his crystals seems to be siphoning whispers around it. You could just... hide her whisper, then release it later for Menhit, as if nothing happened. Maybe it could make Apedemak doubt himself?

As Apedemak chants with his head lifted to the stars painted on the ceiling of the cave, you find a moment to catch Tefnut's whisper into the crystal. You hide it immediately in your mane. His voice gets louder as he says the final verses, but nothing happens - there is only silence. He looks down, confused and quiet.
"I... I don't understand. Was... was she empty inside all along? Is that why I couldn't succeed? Or am I losing my powers?"
You say nothing, pretending to be very confused too.
"No... No matter. I will need a powerful essence, and she was not good for that anyway. I need to channel all the spirits from the Celestial Stone. I need a powerful medium."
He looks at you and smirks. He seems a bit sad, still.
"You did good today. I will take care of her body."
You smile back. You plan to give the crystal to Apollyon and Menhit so that you can pay your respects to Tefnut anyway.
Go back home.

As Apedemak chants with his head lifted to the stars painted on the ceiling of the cave, you join in with instructed humming. Tefnut's whisper slowly rises and enters Apedemak's body through his nose and mouth and you hear the susurrus of quiet, distant voices. They slither in your ears, like the hiss of a malicious serpent. It sounds extremely unpleasant, and your body begins to tremble, overwhelmed with unknown frustration. Apedemak stands up on his hind legs as if a force lifted him upwards, then drops on all fours with a deep thud. His eyes glow for a short while, and then he looks at you with a big grin. His eyes are so blue, you cannot even see his pupils.
"We did this. You are perfect. You will serve as my medium when it's time to channel all the spirits from the Celestial Stone. You did great, my friend. I have high hopes for you!"
Go back home.
